Art has the power to inspire, connect, and heal. Research has shown that engaging in creative activities can help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress while promoting positive mental and emotional well-being. Artistic expression also provides individuals with a meaningful outlet to share their experiences, support their recovery journey, and inspire others.
To celebrate the healing power of art, promote recovery, and help break the stigma surrounding mental illness, local artists recently submitted their original artwork to Gratiot Integrated Health Network (GIHN) for consideration in the Statewide Traveling Art Show, sponsored by the Community Mental Health Association of Michigan (CMHA). Selected artwork will have the honor of representing Gratiot County in this statewide exhibit, highlighting the creativity, resilience, and personal journeys of individuals in our community while reinforcing the message that mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and recovery is possible.
Spaced Out by Morgan McCoy of Alma was chosen by visitors of GIHN as the artwork to represent Gratiot County in the Traveling Art Show. "Art is a form of therapy. People tend to look and judge from the surface instead of taking the time to see and listen to the deeper meaning hidden within. My art is a way for me to express emotions and feelings that I am not able to communicate using words. I use the colors of the paint to define those underlying emotions. I release it by allowing them to float away and dissolve into space."
The art show will tour Michigan at local Community Mental Health agencies, service providers, and art galleries from June 2026 through October 2027. The art will be available for purchase during the tour.
