Program Description

Crisis Intervention

Service Codes: H2011, T1023, 90839, 90840

Program Philosophy: Gratiot Integrated Health Network provides crisis intervention and response services and are prepared to respond to individuals experiencing an acute emotional, behavioral, or social dysfunction, and the authorization/facilitation of inpatient or other protective environment for treatment.

Program Goals:  The goal of the Crisis Intervention Program is to respond to individual/family- identified emergencies to evaluate the precipitating circumstances that prompted the individual to seek help, identify and help to resolve psychosocial conflicts, and refer to appropriate follow-up services. Individuals may achieve stabilization through crisis intervention or be referred to other services. The program staff assess the individual’s emergent needs through pre-screening or crisis evaluation which may evolve through the course of the emergency contact to meet the needs of the consumer.

Services/Scope of Services:  Crisis Intervention services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for any individual who is experiencing a mental health emergency.  Services are provided by phone or face-to-face in the areas of crisis intervention:

  • evaluation—arrangements are made to determine an individual’s mental status, medical status and need for treatment, and when indicated, medication needs and family, employment, or housing situations;
  • intervention—face-to-face counseling and initiation and monitoring of medication when indicated;
  • disposition—ability to provide or make referral for appropriate services within 3 hours of contact with the individual

The program provides these services as needed in locations that meet the needs of the persons served (i.e. agency office, emergency room or other community setting as appropriate).

Services are initiated at the request of the individual, parent or legal guardian.  Information from referral sources will be accepted after proper consent for release of information is obtained. Services will not be denied based on an individual’s inability to pay for services.

Admission/Re-Admission Criteria:  It is the policy of Gratiot Integrated Health Network to provide services to all eligible individuals in a manner that is sensitive to the cultural and socio-economic needs of the individual in a nondiscriminatory and/or non-threatening manner.  Services are provided to eligible individuals without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, age, sex, marital status, sexual preference, handicap, juvenile justice status or any other protected status as required by law.  The agency endeavors to accommodate individuals with special needs, or refers to providers equipped to meet their needs.

Eligibility criteria for Crisis Intervention services include individuals who have/are:

  • self-referred or anyone referred by family, friends, other agencies, local authorities, individuals presenting in local hospitals with no visible means of support (financial or community)
  • experiencing a mental health crisis (in the case of substance abuse the consumer should remain at the hospital until the levels of alcohol or other drugs have decreased to the point where a Mental Health evaluation can take place)

For a child age 14 or older who is seeking services without parental consent, GIHN will be prepared to offer limited services in accordance with PA 186 with CEO or designees approval.

When individuals are found to be ineligible for services, they are given the reason(s) and are directed to alternative or more appropriate services.  In addition, when applicable, the family/support system and/or the referral source are informed as to the reason for ineligibility. Assistance in contacting alternative services is available upon request.

Transition/Discharge Criteria: An individual may be transitioned or discharged from Crisis Intervention Services when one or more of the following occur:

  • Crisis is alleviated and the individual is satisfied with services received
  • Individual is referred to appropriate services based on strengths, choices, and medical necessity
  • Crisis is not due to mental health issues
  • Consumer refuses service

Regardless of discharge status, any individual may reapply for services by contacting GIHN.
